Summer Fun: 5 Tips for Keeping Your Teeth and Mouth healthy during the Summer

Ah! Summertime. Time to kick back and let your hair down. But remember if we are not careful about proper oral hygiene it is quite possible that we may cause irreparable damage our teeth.

Stay hydrated but choose tap water

Keep your mouth moist by drinking water throughout the day at least 2 – 3 litres of water. This helps wash away plaque-causing bacteria and can even improve your breath, more importantly, avoid bottled water. Fluoridated tap water strengthens your enamel, making your teeth more resistant to decay.

Skip the bubbles but if you do Use a straw.

The acid in carbonated drinks can wear down your enamel. But if you do crave for them reduce their contact with your teeth by using a straw and finishing the drink quickly, instead of sipping over a long period of time.

Protect your lips from UV rays.

Many protect their skin with sunscreen but don’t forget SPF 15 or higher lip balm when spending time outdoors. Our lips are susceptible to burning, which over time can cause a variety of issues including skin cancer. So don’t forget lip care.

summer tips for healthy teeth

Stick to your oral hygiene routine

During the summer when the kids are out of school, it’s typical for your routine to fall to the wayside a bit. That’s okay. Summer is a time of fun and it’s important that you indulge yourself in what summer has to offer. That being said, one routine that you cannot afford to compromise on is your oral hygiene routine. No matter what time of year it is, brushing your teeth 2-3 times per day and flossing on a daily basis is essential for your overall health and well-being.

Cut down on dental injuries with a mouth guard

There is a reason that almost all professional athletes use mouth guards; they help to prevent serious, costly injuries. Whether you are playing frisbee on the beach or enjoying a game of volleyball in the pool, a mouth guard is always a smart decision. Mouth guards are available over the counter but these need not be perfectly fitting which doesn’t serve the purpose. Your dentist can fit you with a mouth guard that is high-quality and custom-fitted – just right for you, which will give you more protection during your summer sporting escapades.

Finally, summer is here and is a fun time for the whole family! Whether you’re looking forward to hitting the beach or sitting by the pool (or both), it’s important to remember that you don’t get a vacation from taking care of your oral health.  If you wish to know more about the dental problems you can visit our dental clinic in Kochi. We will help you.
Remember – Stay hydrated and stay healthy.
