The Dos and Don’ts after a Tooth Extraction

Our tooth is expected to remain intact for the entire lifetime. However, due to lack of oral hygiene, calcium deficiency, medical problems, and other conditions can result in tooth decay or infection of the tooth roots. The only remedy for defective teeth is to prevent the issue from spreading to the nearby area.Tooth extraction is the permanent removal of a tooth from the dental socket, mainly using forceps or surgically. Extreme tooth infection, tooth decay, and crowding are the major reasons which require a tooth extraction. By using advanced equipment and medical processes, dental clinics make tooth extraction less painful and easy.

Dentique is one of the leading dental clinics which provides painless tooth extraction in Kochi. Our experienced doctors will remove the defective tooth using ultramodern equipment, which will make the process comfortable for you. Our doctors will also give you advice regarding the dos and don’ts subsequent to tooth extraction.

The Do’s

Of course, you will be guided regarding the dos after tooth extraction by the dental professionals at the clinic. We believe that this article will act as your quick guide concerning the dos after tooth extraction.

  • Take Enough Rest

Tooth extraction is not a complicated process these days with the advent of modern medical equipment and processes. Still, it is advisable to avoid straining the facial muscles at least for the initial 24 hours after the tooth extraction. You can avoid heavy jobs as it will indirectly stress the extracted area and may cause pain and discomfort.

  • Use Ice

Using ice packs on the side of the cheek, where the tooth extraction is performed will be good to prevent or reduce the effect of swelling. Application of ice packs may not be required if the tooth extraction was not complicated or if you don’t feel any discomfort or swelling in the area. The 15 minutes on/ off process is the method advised for using ice packs.

  • Soft Brushing

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush only. In fact, it is better to use soft brushes even if you don’t have any problem with the tooth. Brush gently avoiding any harsh rubbing on the area where the tooth was extracted.

  • Cotton Gauge to Stop Bleeding and Blood Clotting

After the procedure, your dentist will put you a piece of cotton gauze on the extraction area. Try to bite down the cotton and keep it in the place for at least an hour. This will help it to stop bleeding.

  • Luke Warm Saline Rinse

You can rinse your mouth with warm, saline water the day after the tooth surgery. The saline water rinse will improve the healing of the area, reduce discomfort, and reduce the chances of swelling.

The Don’ts

The don’ts after tooth extraction includes things or habits that are to be avoided after tooth removal surgery.

  • Avoid Eating and Drinking Immediately

Eating and drinking just after the surgery may turn harmful to the area. Avoid eating and drinking anything at least for an hour following the surgery. The thing to add with this is talking. Keep yourself silent for at least 60 minutes. Eating ice cream after the initial stipulated time will be good to reduce the discomfort.

  • Don’t drink from a straw

Don’t drink using a straw for one week after the extraction. The suction move of air and cheek muscles while using a straw may upset your blood clot and bleeding may resume. Drinking with a straw can lead to ‘dry socket’ condition as well.

  • No Smoking

Smoking after tooth extraction can be harmful. It will both weaken the blood flow as well as dry up the extraction spot leading to unwanted complications.

  • Don’t Consume Solid Diet

It is recommended to avoid eating solid food items at least 05 hours after the tooth extraction surgery. As mentioned in the do’s, it is best to consume ice cream. Solid food items will exert a load on the tooth, in turn affecting the extracted portion. This may lead to bleeding also.

  • Avoid Poking

For the initial few days, you may find it awkward to find a gap but don’t poke that extracted area with tongue, toothpick or any other thing. It may aggravate bleeding, delay the healing process and damage the extracted area.

  • Don’t Consume Aspirin

Don’t ever take aspirin after the tooth extraction procedure. Aspiring being a blood thinner will delay the blood clotting, which may prevent healing. Consult your dentist before taking any medicine.
